Volcanic ash, wind and water carved the valleys of central Anatolia into cones, pillars and cliffs. People carved them again: churches, homes and whole underground cities cut into the soft rock.

  1. Goreme Open-Air Museum

    Rock-cut churches and chapels with Byzantine frescoes, once the centre of a monastic community.

  2. The fairy chimneys

    The rock pillars of Pasabag and Devrent, and the valleys around Goreme, best seen in the soft light of morning or evening.

  3. An underground city

    Kaymakli or Derinkuyu: several floors of tunnels, stables, kitchens and chapels dug deep below ground. Some passages are narrow and low.

  4. Uchisar Castle

    The highest point of the area, a rock citadel with views over the valleys.

  5. A balloon flight at sunrise

    An optional extra on most of our Cappadocia packages. Flights take off only when the civil aviation authority allows it on the day; if yours is cancelled because of the weather, the balloon price is refunded in full.
